Heated keyboard keeps frosty fingers at bay

May 24th, 2007

As you may be aware Our Picks love keyboards that are a bit on the strange side. Here’s another one that’s a possible addition to the top ten, the heated keyboard from V8 Tools. The keyboard pumps out up to 20W of heat and has two settings - hand temp (85 to 90 F) and body temp (95 to 100 F). It draws its power from the mains and connects via USB to your PC.

Heated Keyboard from V8 Tools

Combine this with the heated foot rest from CozyWinters (what a great name) and you will be the envy of all your office colleagues.

Sony Corp Changes PS3′s Circuits, PS2 Compatibility Levels for Product Release in Europe

March 11th, 2007
PlayStation3

Sony fans in Europe may want to find another way other than selling their aging PS2 systems if they need a little extra cash to buy a PlayStation 3 when it’s released on March 23rd. Sony recently made news when it was revealed that a chip responsible for PlayStation 2 compatibility has been removed from the European version of the PS3, in favor of a somewhat less-compatible software solution. Sony Corp noted that the change will make mass production of the console quicker and easier, cutting costs in the process.

It’s no secret that Sony has been losing money on every console they sell, all in the hopes of covering their losses and turning a profit off of add-ons, third-party licenses, etc. Anyone that ever purchased a dirt-cheap printer and then paid five times more than that just for the ink will know this tactic is nothing new. But with the amount lost on every PS3 sold (the words ‘hemorrhaging cash’ come to mind here,) it would be in Sony’s best interest to save any pennies they can on their current console war offering – A war where the chief competition costs half as much and has three times the interactivity.

Is this a subtle sign that the console giant may be losing a little faith in its masterpiece’s marketability? Or are choices like this just simple economics, a typical effort to streamline production, maybe learning from past mistakes made in the US and Japan at product launch, making sure there’s actual product on the shelves? That’s an unknown to me at this point, as well as if Sony plans the same schematic update in future US and Japan PS3s, but hey, that’s why the readers here get to reply, isn’t it? What’s your insight?

The $3,000 iPhone

March 2nd, 2007
Expensive iPhone

We all know that the long expected iPhone was announced under a price of $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB one. Chris Seibold from Apple Matters analyzed the expenses of owning an iPhone, and the results multiples the cost of the phone by 5.

In case you want to review the list yourself, or in case you’re thinking of purchasing an iPhone, here it is.

Cingular (AT&T) service: $39.99 (450 min) to $199.99 (6000 min)
Bluetooth earpiece: $50
Data package: $20-$50
Getting out of your current contract: $200.00
Car charger: $40
Case: $50

So for a two years contract, he evaluated the expenses all the way up to just a bit over $3,000, all the expenses included. Please do read that again. $3,000. So the iPhone is going to cost a bunch but it will be worth it; the complaints about the virtual keyboard and the comparisons to the Newton are specious. If the iPhone functions half as effortlessly as it did in the Steve Jobs demo, the experience will be worth every penny.

Wow, the iPhone is going to cost a ton; that is more than Steve Jobs makes in a millennium! Of course, no one would buy an iPhone if the total cost was demanded up front so, thankfully, Cingular will let you pay for the thing in monthly contractually obligated payments. It can’t possibly be worth the thousands just for the glory of using an iPhone, can it?

So, how badly do you want an iPhone?
