Handy with a screwdriver and need some more hard drive space on your laptop? Well, the latest 2.5 inch 250 GB notebook storage kits from Toshiba may be just the answer for you. They’ve just unleashed a series of five hard drives ranging in capacity from 80 GB through to 250 GB that the untrained user can upgrade their laptop or suitable external storage device with. These suckers also talk nicely to Macs as well; here are a few more bits and pieces about them
* SATA Interface
* 0.37 x 2.75 x 3.94 inches
* 3.5 oz
* 8 MB buffer
* 5,400 rpm (4,200 for the 200 GB model)
* Windows, OS X and Linux will all talk to these babies
The price for the 250 GB model is US$190 dropping down to $80 for the 80 GB which seems a steal to be able to ramp up your laptop.
Toshiba have incorporated these drives into a new range of external drives too. Rather bizarrely the 250 GB external is the same price as the standalone model at US$190. The externals have USB 2.0 connectivity and will talk with both PCs and Macs.

This post isn’t for the fiscally-challenged my friends, so look away now if the inside of your wallet hasn’t seen the light of day for a while. Despite looking sexy and no doubt sporting their usual high standard in sound quality the latest DAP from Bang & Olufsen, the BeoSound 6 will set you back six hundred big ones. I’ll give you a moment to get over the shock …. yes a DAP for more than an iPhone, what are they thinking? Well, quality over quantity as usual with B&O. Your $600 gets you a 4GB mp3 player with 40 hours of battery life, which talks nicely to both Mac and PCs. It sports a small 128 x 160 res screen that doesn’t play vid and comes with a slim fit leather case which conveniently hides the A8 earphones that come with the unit when not in use.
So what about the quality I hear you asking, well according to the blurb
Its superior sound performance rivals that of home audio systems. When compared
to other MP3 players, BeoSound 6 has a very clear and pure CD sound
quality, due to its high performance on signal to noise playback.
Hmm, whilst I’m sure the masses won’t be beating a path to their nearest B&O dealership to pick up one of these puppies, there will be B&O fans out there who’ll be happy spending the pingers on the unit. And just in case those fans do have more money than sense some hard-earned cash left over then they can grab the bluetooth headset EarSet2 for a snip at US$350 too.
If anyone out there does have one of these suckers then let us know if the quality really is worth six hundred dollars.

Another snippet from the FPD International 2007 showcase. LG are showing off their latest ‘G Platform’ plasma TVs that sport a staggering contrast ratio of 30,000:1. This is double the current 15,000:1 ratio of their existing HD plasma TVs and according to the blurb
G Platform panels are capable of reproducing exceptionally true colors across the entire spectrum, including even deep blacks with a 20 percent reduced reflection rate. In contrast to existing black panels, which are able to improve colors on the screen only by using clear black-colored panels, LG has improved color reproduction by optimizing the panels’ color phosphors and utilizing dielectrics.
The ‘G Platform’ will be available in 32, 42 and 50 inch 720 HD models plus 50 and 60 inch 1080 HD versions. No pricing on these suckers as yet, but I’m guessing you’d better start saving now!

This week Epson launched its latest home cinema projector on to the market. The PowerLite Home Cinema 720 is priced at US$1,300 making it a mid-range purchase, suitable for a home enthusiast looking for a hi-def projector. The PowerLite’s features include 1,600 lumens of brightness, 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 16:9 display ratio, hi def quality up to 120 inch display, 4,000 hours of lamp life plus numerous inputs including HMDI, Component Video, S-Video and Composite Video. It also sports 3LCD technology which according to the blurb
3LCD is the world’s leading projection technology, delivering unbelievable color, amazing detail and road-tested reliability. Using an advanced 3-chip design, 3LCD offers full-time RGB for brilliant quality images without the possibility of color break-up.
So how does this sucker stack up against other projectors

I deliberately picked higher priced projectors, but even so the Epson stacks well against these competitors. The only downside may be the 120 inch display with both the Panasonic and Mitsubishi giving at least 66% diagonal width to your movie. So it looks as if Epson have come up with a winner here.
If anyone has one of these suckers feel free to drop me a line and let me know what you think.
