Cowon S9 16 GB PMP

December 25th, 2008

Cowon S9 16 GB PMP

It’s a cool looking unit, the Cowon S9 PMP, but then you’d expect that for a US$240 tagged PMP. You’d also expect a few nice bells and whistles so here they are for you to work exactly how cool the S9 is.

* 16 GB capacity
* Touchscreen interface
* USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* Composite video out
* 2.2 x 4.17 x 0.5 inches
* 2.7 oz
* Video formats supported - AVI, WMV
* Audio formats supported - MP3/2/1, WMA, FLAC, OGG, WAV, APE
* 480 x 272 video res
* 11 hours of video playback time
* 55 hours of audio playback time
* Built in microphone
* Handles jpg and txt file fomat

Despite all this we feel US$240 is a tad too high making the Cowon S9 more ho hum than ho ho ho. For example the Cody 30 GB PMP is available for only US$185, admittedly sans touchscreen, but hey $60 so I can get grubby fingerprints all over my viewing screen, I don’t think so, but then may be we’re just old-fashioned kinda guys.

ZVOX launch Z-Base 550 TV stand

December 21st, 2008

ZVOX Z-Base 550 TV stand

Cunninngly disguised as a TV stand, ZVOX’s Z-Base 550 surround sound system takes the soundbar concept top the next level. The whole unit measures 28 inches wide by 14.5 deep and stands 3.5 inches high, small enough to be inconspicuous but large enough (and strong enough too hopefully) to handle a 50 inch flat screen TV atop of it. As with all soundbar’s you’ve got to question the actual ‘surround’ sound quality but as combo concepts go the TV stand cum audio system is pretty cool. Here are a few more bits and pieces on the Z-Base 550.

* ZVOX proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround system
* 20 lbs
* 60 Watt amp
* Two rear “mixing” inputs
* 5.25″ subwoofer uses a high-mass long-throw design in a ported enclosure
* Five 2 ” main speaker drivers use ferrofluid and neodymium magnets to create remarkably loud, remarkably clear sound

To be honest we’re not totally convinced by these soundbars ability to reproduce true surround sound but if you’re short of space then the ZVOX Z-Base 550 could be just what you’re looking for. Or if you’re short of cash, as this little sucker rocks in at a neat US$500. Not so un-sexy now, eh?

Viewsonic launch the VT2430 24 inch 1080p LCD HDTV

December 18th, 2008

Viewsonic VT2430 LCD HDTV

Sort of just in time for Christmas, Viewsonic have unleashed the VT2430 LCD HDTV on the world. The 24 inch unit sports 1080p resolution and a staggering US$400 price tag. For the other bits and pieces read on

* 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
* ATSC / NTSC / QAM TV tuner
* HDMI 1.3, VGA, component, s-video, and composite connectivity
* 250 nits brightness
* 16:9 aspect ratio (1920 x 1080 res)

Some would say we’re easily impressed, but I think Viewsonic VT2430′s specs speak for themselves, especially when a mouth-watering US$400 price tag is hanging around its neck. Admittedly not the largest screen on the block but then as a second unit it could be a damn fine choice or a first option if you don’t want your TV to dominate your surroundings.

Motorola i9 clam shell not quite out there yet

December 17th, 2008

Motorola i9
Lots of information is floating around about the Motorola i9 clam shell, but the little sucker is yet to surface or even have a price tag attached to it. Electronista suggest that the i9 will be available at Sprint, but there’s no sign of it over at Sprint’s website as of yet. Anyway here are the bells and whistles on the little unit

* iDEN network (800 MHz)
* 3 Mp camera with video recording
* Handles MPEG4, 3GP, RealVideo, WMV, H.263, H.264 video formats
* Handles MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, RA audio format
* microSD memory slot
* USB and Bluetooth connectivity

The i9′s controls are similar to the ROKR E8, which means they will switch functions depending on whether you are listening to tunes or making a call. Other than that no one seems to know much about the i9, especially on the launch date or price tag front. So we’ll just have to wait for Sprint to pull finger and give us an official launch before we can say yay or nay to the Motorola i9.

Digeo Moxi HD DVR at Amazon

December 14th, 2008

Digeo Moxi DVR

Looking for a new DVR to go with that big HDTV you’ve got? May be the Digeo Moxi HD DVR is the answer you’ve been looking for? If so you’d better act quick as there are currently only a limited number available at Amazon, with a full launch in the New Year.

* CableCARD support
* 500 GB HDD for up to 75 hours of HD recording
* 10.5 x 12 x 3 inches
* 15.2 pounds
* Dual HD Tuners

There’s an US$800 price tag on this little sucker which seems a bit steep, for US$600 you can get 150 hours of HD with a Tivo HD XL DVR. So the Moxi may not be the great bargain we’re all after.

Motorola AURA costs US$2000

December 13th, 2008

Motorola AURA

We’re used to seeing cellphones priced under US$100 these days, but the Motorola AURA is firmly entrenched at the other end of the scale with a staggering US$2000 price tag. Surely this unit would only appeal to the financially unsound? Anyway once you’ve recovered from the jaw-dropping price tag, check out the stats on this expensive sucker.

* Quad band, 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
* Bluetooth connectivity
* 2 GB memory
* 2 Mp camera
* 1.87 x 3.81 x .730 in
* Circular 1.55 inch display
* 4.97 oz
* 400 hours of standby time
* 7.3 hours of talk time

It appears that Motorola feel that a Scratch-resistant, 62-carat, Grade 1 sapphire crystal lens justifies the two grand price tag on the AURA. Considering the camera only takes 2Mp images, we’re not impressed. We’re also not too sure who’s gonna buy one of these suckers either, some one with more money than sense we suspect.

Sony VPL-GH10 SXRD projector

December 11th, 2008

Sony SXRD logo
Here’s another projector, the Sony VPL-GH10 from their SXRD range, supposedly with its lens fairly and squarely aimed at business use

high-resolution professional projector specifically designed for the simulation, training and industrial visualization markets

Yeah right, I sure the first time this little sucker gets taken out of its box will be, oh may be around the end of January on one sunny Sunday afternoon may be? Sorry I’m getting a bit cynical there, but yet again this ‘business’ projector, certainly will ‘do the business’ right in your very own home. Check out the more than adequate specs

* Full HD 1920 x 1080 res display
* 1.6x zoom lens
* Motorized horizontal and vertical shift function on the lens
* Onboard RJ45 Ethernet network port

Sony have squeezed in their Motionflow technology into the VPL-GH10 too. Motionflow manages to squeeze in another 60 frames per second over the normal 60 frames using a cunning algorithm to work out what the extra frames should display. This in theory will increase image quality especially for fast moving scenes, err such as football games.

Unfortunately for all you football fans, the VPL-GH10 won’t be available until the spring of next year and still has no price tag as yet. But of course there’s never an excuse for not getting all geared up for the following season, right?
