Panasonic Viera P905iTV phone

February 28th, 2008

Panasonic P905iTV phone
No, Panasonic’s Viera P905iTV is not a snazzy new HD TV, it’s a mobile phone which sports a display with TV-esque specifications. The boys over at Panasonic have grabbed their TV making skills and shoved them into a mobile phone, hence the Viera moniker. Check these impressive specs

* 3.5 inch 854 x 480 res display
* 30 fps playback
* 4,000:1 contrast ratio
* TV out port

Oh yeah, you can use it as a mp3 playing camera phone too

* HSDPA connectivity
* Audio output port
* 2 MP camera
* SDHC memory slot

Panasonic are also boasting 660 hours on standby before this sucker needs to be re-juiced. This figure drops down to 160 minutes if you’re watching TV. The P905iTV certainly has all the bells and whistles for a multi-media fanatic who talks a lot, however two downers unless you live in Japan and/or have oodles of cash, no word on a price, but don’t expect this to become this year’s stocking filler at Christmas, and it’s only currently available in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Personally, I’d struggle to watch the SuperBowl on this thing, but for news and current affairs proggies, it could just do the trick.

LG’s super sleek LG6000 and PG6000 HD TVs

February 19th, 2008

LG LG6000 and PG6000 HDTVs

LG will soon be launching their latest HDTV ranges, the LG6000 and PG6000. These super sexy models were shown off at CES but will be available soon in the UK and hopefully elsewhere not long after. The LCD LG6000 range sports four models a 32, 37, 42 and 47 inch versions, whilst the Plasma PG6000 comes in two flavours, 42 and 50 inch. Here’s the shared features of the two ranges

* 15,000:1 contrast ratio (30,000:1 for plasma)
* 24p Tru Cinema
* Four HDMI 1.3 inputs
* USB 2.0 port for looking at photos or listening to mp3s

The LG6000 range also boast ‘invisible’ Mark Levinson speakers which provide a wider ‘sweet spot’ by creating a virtual wall of sound - hmmm - I’ll believe that when I, err, hear it. Despite the marketing hyperbole, I’m sure LG’s latest HDTV offerings will make the grade. Unfortunately we have no idea whether your bank manager will agree as price tags are not currently available.

Clickfree HD700 automatic backup HDD

February 18th, 2008

Clickfree HD700 no touch backupPersonally I like a little bit of control over my software and data, but for anyone’s who’s less of a control freak than me, the latest external HDD offering from Clickfree, the HD700, may fulfill all your backup requirements. Whilst it currently only rocks in at 120 GB, Clickfree do promise to release a 250 GB version later. So with this sucker you just plug it into your the USB socket of your Windows box and it backs up your data. Again we’re assuming there’s a little more to it than that, but with the software required housed on the drive, there won’t a helluva lot more. Here’s the breakdown of this puppy.

* 2.5 inch SATA 120 GB drive
* spins at 5,400 RPM
* 8 MB cache buffer
* USB 2.0 and 1.1
* 115 x 17 x 76 mm
* 180 g
* plays nicely with any flavour of windows from 2000 up

The price tag hanging around the HD700′s neck is US$170, which is probably a little high, as for an extra $60 you can grab almost 3x as much storage space with this Western Digital external hard drive. Of course if being able to make automatic backups of your hard drive is important, then the Clickfree HD700 is just the external drive for you.

Hannspree XV 42 inch LCD TV

February 14th, 2008

Hannspree XV 42 inch LCD TVHannspree have just launched their latest offering in the LCD TV world, the XV AT with a 42 inch widescreen 1366 x 768 HD display. This little sucker will set you back GBP 600 (about US$1200) and has the following specs and features

* 42 inch 1366 x 768 res 16:9 display
* 2 x 15 watt speakers
* Analog input, Digital DVB-T input, 2 x HDMI inputs
* 1,500:1 contrast ratio
* 178 degree viewing angle
* 1050 x 767 x 296 mm
* 24 kg

There is a coaxial audio output, which is just as well cos 2 x 15 W just ain’t gonna cut it on the audio front. There’s also a VGA input to hook up to your PC as well. This looks like a great low-end unit, although it’s only available in the UK at the moment, hopefully Hannspree will give the XV AT a world-wide release soon.

Asus U6S leather ultra-portable

February 14th, 2008

Asus U6S leather ultra-portable

We took a look at the Asus leather clad laptop, the U2, last year and today we shall take a gander at their ultra-portable offering the U6S another leather unit. Over at HotHardware they have done a full review and give the U6S a thumbs-up despite noting an issue re short battery-life and with it weighing in at 1.57 kg you could argue that it’s not really ‘ultra-portable’. However here are the stats that did grab their attention

* Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.2GHz,4M L2 Cache,800MHz FSB)
* Vista Business
* 2 GB Memory
* 12.1″ LED 1280×800 res display
* 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G
* 802.11a/b/g/n connectivity
* Bluetooth 2.0, 3G/3.5G, HSPDA connectivity
* 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
* Ultra Slim DVD Super Multi Double Layer
* 300 x 220 x 31.6 mm
* 1.57 kg
* 4 x USB 2.0, 1 x HDMI, 1 x RJ11, 1 x RJ45 ethernet ports

The U6S is indeed feature-rich and with a price tag of US$1650 looks like good value. However the short battery life and weight are real downers for me - surely the idea of an ultra-portable laptop is, err, its portability. I’d rather shell out a few more bucks for a lighter and longer battery life model - but if that doesn’t concern you and you like the feel of leather in your lap then the U6S is probably right up your street!

Samsung launch the swivel phone, SCH-W350 aka SPH-W3500

February 5th, 2008

Samsung SCH-W350

Despite only currently being available in Samsung‘s native Korea, I’m pretty sure this swivel design from Samsung will be picked up elsewhere very soon. This nifty feature is currently available on Samsung’s latest offering, the SCH-W350 (aka SPH-W3500) which also sports HDSPA connectivity providing a mega speedy 7.2 Mbps compared to the the standard 3.6 Mbps. Other features include

* MP3 playback
* 3MP camera
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* Global roaming

These suckers will set you back at least the equivalent of US$635 if you should feel the need to rush over to Korea to grab one and I’m not sure if I’d want to be the mug who ends up holding one of these whilst watching a video with friends. But anyway the design is sure to catch on and should be available on a phone closer to you very soon.
