The LG Dare touchscreen smartphone is now available at Verizon’s online store. This supposed iPhone killer packs a decent set of specs to back up this claim, check them out for yourself
* 3 inch 240 x 400 res LCD touchscreen with tactile feedback
* 3.2 Mp camera (2048 x 1536 max res) and camcorder (640 x 480 max res)
* plays mp3, wma, aac audio files
* microSD slot for up to 8 GB of expanded memory
* Bluetooth connectivity
* 104.1 x 55.9 x 12.7 mm
* 106.6 g
* 360 hours battery life on standby
* 280 minutes battery life in use
Not bad and with a price tag of US$200 after discount with a two year plan, LG and Verizon have dared to put together a rather neat package. Whether it will truly be an iPhone killer we’re not so sure, but it certainly is another option to consider when looking at cheap smartphones.

Not too much in the way of detail on these suckers yet, but Lenovo have unleashed a few tidbits on their latest notebook line, the ThinkPad SL. The range is aimed at individuals and small businesses that want a professional notebook with some home-user features. Here’s a few details on the ThinkPad SL range
* Online backup service
* Absolute Software’s LoJack theft-protection software
* Lenovo’s ThinkVantage hardware and software
* Active Protection System
Like we said, actuals specs are a bit thin on the ground at the moment, but they do have a price tag of US$700 to US$1200. Obviously we’ll wait until we see fuller specs before committing to an opinion on these suckers.

For a super low US$130 you can score yourself the snazzy Samsung Instinct touchscreen phone over at Sprint. Unfortunately for that price you also get a two year plan. Here are the usual bits and pieces on this sucker
* 56 x 117 x 13 mm
* 128 g
* 5.75 hours of talk time with the 1000 mAh battery
* GPS Navigation
* 2.0 Mp camera and video recorder
* Voice-activated commands
* Bluetooth connectivity
* 2 GB memory card upgradable to 8 GB
* Contact sync with PC
Undercutting the US$200 Apple iPhone, Samsung have produced quite a nice competitor in this market. We don’t think it quite matches the iPhone in looks or specs but if dollars are your main priority then this could be your ‘iPhone’.

After all the hoopla surrounding the 3G iPhone, Verizon decide to go on the offensive with a remarkably boring phone, the Nokia 6205 clamshell. Just look and see
* 1.3 Mp camera
* 58 MB memory expandable up to 4 GB with microSD memory card
* Bluetooth connectivity
* GPS with Verizon’s VZ Navigator service
* 2 inch 220 x 176 res internal display
* 1.28 inch 128 x 128 res external display
Yeah, ho hum, eh? The only good thing about this unit, if it’s your bag, is the limited edition Dark Knight version which is unleashed on the 15th of June with a plain version out in July. Oh yeah the price tag’s not too shabby either at US$70 after rebate with a two year shackle. So if you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful cellphone with a cool bat logo but not a lot else, groove on over to the Verizon site.

Today was the day that all the rumour-mongering ended and Apple unveiled the long-awaited, and I mean looong-awaited, 3G iPhone. So was that wait worthwhile - here are a few bits and pieces on the sucker
* 3G HSDPA connectivity
* Seamless connectivity with Wi-fi when available
* UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* GPS functionality
* Ambient light sensor
* Proximity sensor
* 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm
* 133 g
* 3.5 inch widescreen 480 x 320 res display
* 8 GB or 16 GB flavours
* Audio support for AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 1, 2, and 3), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
* Video support for m4v, mp4 and mov file formats
* 2.0 Mp camera
* 5 hours talktime on 3G, 10 on 2G
* 300 hours standby
* Plays nicely with Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later, Windows Vista, XP Pro or Home with SP2 or later
But here’s the killer punch, price tags of US$200 for the 8 GB model and US$300 for the 16. Not bad Apple, however the tags come with the usual plan shackles, but still not bad it has to be said.
The 3G iPhone will undoubtedly sell like the proverbial hot cakes and fanboys just about all over the planet will be camping out for one of these suckers come July 11th. As for us, well, we’ll be checking it out for sure but as for purchasing, we’ve already got mp3 players and cellphones thank you very much ;)

With Apple about to presumably announce the 3G iPhone, Samsung are trying to steal their thunder by launching their i900 Omnia. So is the Omnia an iPhone killer, check out the following bits and pieces and make up your own mind.
* Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro
* Quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE support
* HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps for 3G connectivity
* Wi-fi connectivity
* USB connectivity
* FM radio
* Bluetooth connectivity
* 3.2 inch 400 x 240 res display (Wide QVGA)
* 5 Mp auto-focus camera
* 8 and 16 GB options with an extra 8 GB or more storage available from a microSD slot
* Samsung’s TouchWiz interface
* Opera Mobile browser
* DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264, Windows Media Video and MP4 support
* 112 x 57 x 12.5 mm
This little sucker will be seeing the light of day this month in certain parts probably Asia, with a European appearance the following month. The Omnia will also play nicely with US networks but none have made any announcements as of yet.
So is this to be Samsung’s iPhone killer? Well, without a price tag, we’re not going to fully commit, but that aside there’s the matter of smaller, lower res display and a slightly thicker body, so unless the price tag comes up trumps we’ll be siding with Steve on this one.

The Mini PC Nova Lite PX24 has been unleashed by the boys at ASUS and a fine piece of kit it looks too. They claim that it is the world’s smallest PC to offer 1080p HD playback. Here are a few more bits and pieces about the unit
* dedicated graphics card pumping out 1080p
* 241 x 183 x 51 mm
* low 26db noise level
* built-in speaker with 5.1 channel optical outputs
* 1.2 GHz Intel Celeron 220 CPU
* 2 GB memory
* SATA II HDD either 160 or 250 GB capacity
* sports Vista with Media Centre software
* HDMI and DVI-I outputs
* DVD drive
Yet again no Blu-Ray love - guys the war is over - and no price tag as of yet either. So we’ll hold back on the cheers or booes for the moment but as far as looks go, we’ll give the Nova Lite a definite ‘Sexy’ mark.
