Cowon seem to be going against the flow with their X7 portable media player. Whilst other manufacturers are trying to squeeze in as much storage as possible into small units, Cowon have not pursued this and their X7 is a massive 6.1 by 3.2 inches, more of a tablet than a media player. We’re not sure this is the right why to go but of course the upside is a large amount of storage with 160 GB available. Here’s a full list of features on the Cowon X7 portable media player
* 4.3 inch TFT LCD, 16 million colors, res. 480×272, ultra portable
* 160GB storage
* JetEffect 3.0 audio engine
* 103 hours music, 10 hours video battery
* Divx video support
* Touch sensitive interface
* Bluetooth, Voice recorder with internal microphone, FM radio, TV-out supporting composite connections and built-in speaker
* 3.2 x 0.4 x 6.1 inches
* 1.3 pounds
The overall impression on the net is that the Cowon X7 is a pretty good media player if you can get past the obvious downsides. Whilst not exactly heavy the X7 is not light either and obviously the phrase pocket-sized is NOT going to appear in the same sentence as the X7. However, it’s large storage and long battery life is ideal for users with large audio collections who are on the road a lot. Most reviewers confirmed close to the mooted 10 hour video time.

Ok, so Cowon’s latest PMP, the V5 HD, is currently only being launched in their homeland of Korea in January but surely a US and worldwide release will shortly follow. For those of you eager to see what Cowon have stuffed into the V5 here’s the list of impressive specs
* 4.8 inch 800 x 480 res touchscreen
* WinCE 6.0
* 720p HDMI output
* H.264 support
* SD memory card slot
* Wi-Fi connectivity
* 45 hours of audio playback on battery
* 10 hours of video playback on battery
* 128x82x15.7mm
Three versions of the V5 HD will be released with varying capacities at 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. The V5 will appear in Korea in the New Year with a price tag the equivalent of US$250 for the 8GB version. We must admit we’re not usually too impressed with Cowon PMP players but the V5 HD certainly seems to taken their range up a notch or two in our estimation. The 720p HDMI output with Wi-Fi connectivity turn this media player almost into a netbook. We’re not too sure what apps you can get for WinCE but we did only say ‘almost’ a netbook.
As usual if anyone out there has played with a Cowon V5 HD please let us know what you think of this neat PMP.

We weren’t too impressed by the Cowon S9 16GB offering just before Christmas and now they’ve released a 32 GB version at least at Amazon. We’re still not too impressed as you’re basically paying over the odds for a touchscreen device but we are hearing great things about AMOLED displays so may be the 32GB S9 is worth a look. Here are the details on the unit
* 3.3 inch 16:9 AMOLED 480 x 272 res display
* Bluetooth, Voice recorder with internal microphone, FM radio and TV-out supporting composite connections
* 11 hours of video playback
* 55 hours of audio playback
* 3.5 mm headphone socket
* Codec Support for MP3/2/1 WMA FLAC OGG WAV APE
* 10.4 x 4.1 x 1.4 inches
* 1 lb
* Touch sensitive interface
We still think US$300 is a touch too much for a PMP, but you be the judge, and if you check one out let us know what you think of the Cowon S9 PMP.

It’s a cool looking unit, the Cowon S9 PMP, but then you’d expect that for a US$240 tagged PMP. You’d also expect a few nice bells and whistles so here they are for you to work exactly how cool the S9 is.
* 16 GB capacity
* Touchscreen interface
* USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* Composite video out
* 2.2 x 4.17 x 0.5 inches
* 2.7 oz
* Video formats supported - AVI, WMV
* Audio formats supported - MP3/2/1, WMA, FLAC, OGG, WAV, APE
* 480 x 272 video res
* 11 hours of video playback time
* 55 hours of audio playback time
* Built in microphone
* Handles jpg and txt file fomat
Despite all this we feel US$240 is a tad too high making the Cowon S9 more ho hum than ho ho ho. For example the Cody 30 GB PMP is available for only US$185, admittedly sans touchscreen, but hey $60 so I can get grubby fingerprints all over my viewing screen, I don’t think so, but then may be we’re just old-fashioned kinda guys.
