Yamaha launch YHT-S400 home theatre package

December 24th, 2009

Yamaha YHT-S400 home theatre

Merry Christmas everybody, and here’s a little present from the boys at Yamaha, the YHT-S400 home theatre system. A cool $600 will get you a streamlined soundbar which ‘fits in front of almost any TV’ and an intriguingly designed receiver with sub-woofer integrated. Talk about maximising your lounge’s living area! As we’ve mentioned before we’re still not convinced by soundbars but if you’re short of space then you can’t go wrong with the YHT-S400. Here are some details on the Yamaha creation

* System Frequency Response 35 Hz–20 kHz
* Driver 1-1/2″ x 3-3/4″ cone x 3
* 31.5 x 2 x 2.75 inches
* 3.4 lbs.
* Front Speakers 50 W x 3
* Subwoofer 100 W
* 5″ cone woofer
* 17.2 x 6 x 14.25 inches
* 19 lbs.

The soundbar and the subwoofer use Yamaha’s very own Air Surround Xtreme to create the surround sound experience allowing you to ‘identify sounds located around and behind you’, which you’d sort of hope a ‘surround’ system would do. There is one feature that did pop out at us though, Yamaha’s UniVolume, which ‘maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources’. Very handy for the TV stations that do crank up the volume during commercial breaks.

So if you’re a bit cramped for space in your lounge then the Yamaha YHT-S400 may be just what you’ve asked Santa for. If it is, let’s hope he’s picked it up for you at Amazon as they’ve already slashed $100 off Yamaha’s price tag and you can get your mits on the YHT-400S for only $500.

Yamaha YAS-70 front surround system

April 2nd, 2009

Yamaha YAS-70 front surround system

Whilst we’re not toally convinced by front surround sound systems, we do appreciate their space-saving and cable-reducing capabilities. We’ve already taken a look at an all-in-one offering from Yamaha, the YSP-500, and here’s a dual unit model, the Yamaha YAS-70. With the YAS-70, Yamaha have split out the sub-woofer unit from the main ‘soundbar’. This single change alone will probably improve the bass quality no end. Anyway here and the bits and pieces on the YAS-70

* Dolby Pro Logic II
* DTS 5.1 channel sound format
* Total 310W (35W x 6 channels + 100W subwoofer) output power
* 4 surround programs
* FM Tuner
* Digital Optical and Coaxial Inputs
* Center System 37 x 4 x 4 inches
* Subwoofer / System Control 11 x 19.5 x 13.5 inches
* 9.9 lbs. / 33.1 lbs

You can also hook up your iPod via an optional Yamaha Universal iPod Dock and crank out some tunes through this sucker as well using the same remote control.

Now here’s the real good news, the Yamaha YAS-70 is available for only US$200 over at Amazon. And judging by the users reviews which give it 4.5 stars out of 5, the YAS-70 is a hot little number.

Yamaha YSP-500 Sound Projector

October 8th, 2007

Yamaha YSP500 Sound Projector
Seems like these sound projectors are all the rage at the moment, especially with people limited for space for their surround sound thrills or those of use fed up with speaker cables adorning their lounge floor. Well Yamaha have released an entry level unit, the YSP-500, for 75,000 yen about US$640, no news on a US launch but with Santa revving up the reindeer watch this space.

As befits an entry level model, the YSP-500 sports unremarkable specs at a mere 62W total output but does spread this over eighteen speakers of which sixteen are supposed to bounce the audio around your lounge to give a surround sound effect. The ‘IntelliBeam Automated System Calibration’ feature sets up these speakers to produce the ‘surround sound’ effect and not unsurprisingly an uncluttered room assists in this success of this process.

Although I’m all for getting rid of speaker cables and saving space around the home, I would want to test one of these systems out before purchasing as my lounge tends to be a little on the ‘cluttered’ side! Anyone out there have one of these systems? If so let us know what you think.
