AVM release the Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7170

July 23rd, 2007

Fritz!BoxEver wanted all your home telecommunications needs bundled up in one little box, well you’re probably looking for the Fritz!Box from AVM. They have just released the Fritz!Fon Fon WLAN 7170, a ludicrously long name for a small device which packs in more functionality than you could wish for. Basically the box combines your standard wireless modem/router with landline and internet phone functionality.

The 7170 has three analogue phone sockets enabling you to hook up your landline phone, fax and err something else. It also boasts a connection for ISDN phones and of course provides standard wireless networking for your home.

Other bells and whistles thrown in for good measure include

USB port for network sharing of printers and drives
Child lock for internet access
An Eco mode to save the planet

Not bad for a little sucker which rocks in at 160 euros (US$220) and looks quite sexy too! Unfortunately for my US readers the Fritz!Box is only available across the pond. But if any European visitor has one of these puppies, add a comment and let us all what you think of the Fritz!Box.

  1. Jehel:

At least in France, we have 3 major competitors on the ADSL market(Orange, Free and Neuf Cegetel): both provide to their customers “boxes”.

Neuf Cegetel box (NeufBox 4 or NB4), got 1 phone port, 4 Ethernet port, 1 ADSL port, WiFi 802.11g and 2 USB host, Cardbus and Mini-PCI slot. A new firmware is curently deployed and include FON function (http://www.groupeneufcegetel.fr/html/en/Press/cps/Neuf_Boxes_become_part_of_the_Neuf_WiFi_community.html).
Source code of the NB4 will be available also (we don’t know when, but http://neufbox-opensource.ath.cx/ website from one customer is ready).

    NB4 price is 79Euros.
