Mobile phones: Going on a diet?

There’s no doubt that mobile phones are here to stay. But what will the future bring in their designs? Different manufacturers place their bets on different designs. The first one would be the “all-in-one” cellphones that have started to appear. Here I could remind the N series from Nokia, the new phones from Sony Ericsson (although we have seen exceptions from that), and some Samsung phones. The other type of design that has really started to catch on is the small thin design promoted mainly by Motorola. What could be said about each design?

The thin one

I think the Motorola V3i is the definition of thin and small. The advantages are obvious: you don’t have to walk around with a brick in your pocket. The disadvantages are the lack of high-tech accessories (for example, using 3G significantly increases the thickness), and the increased price of current accessories (the smaller, the more expensive). Regarding the looks, this is the way to go.

One of the newest phones from Nokia is the N93. What does it got that no other phone has (to my knowledge) is a 3x optical zoom. With it, the N93 crosses from a fancy phone to the realm of digital cameras. This would be the advantages. The disadvantage is the size, and that would be all.

All in all, it’s my opinion that, in the future, accessories such as cameras and all will get smaller and cheaper, and so the thin models will catch on. But only time will tell. What do you think?
