Hard-drive protection from Seagate

April 9th, 2007

As I was saying earlier Seagate was developing a hardware encrypted hard-disk to provide extended security. It seems the technology is now ready and the first hard-drive to use it is The Momentus 5400 FDE.2 (Full Disc Encryption) that provides up to 160 GB of storage via a sATA interface protected by hardware-based AES encryption.

The new hard-drives are supposed to be part of the new ASI C8015 system from ASI Computer Technologies. We’re talking about a laptop fitted with a biometric fingerprint reader and other security features like the Wave Systems Embassy Security Center’s Trusted Drive Manager software used for easily configuration of the Momentus 5400 hard-drive.

The whole system is design in order for Administrators to easily protect data, or delete it in such manner that it cannot be recovered. You might not need all this in your regular home-use laptop but there are many users in industries like finance, legal or healthcare that will be happy to pay the price needed to provide ultimate protection for they’re data.

Digital Drawing Board

April 9th, 2007

This is what I call innovation. Back in my day we used a blackboard and chalk but it seems that future generations won’t have to get their hands dirty. This digital drawing board it’s not only clean and easy to use, as you can se it acts as a environment with predefined rules. Besides being cool this is a huge help when teaching physics classes or when you need simple animations to show your point.

Though it might take a while until we see this kind of hardware in the schools near you, it’s sure that technologies like this or derived from it are going to make our life better. What do you say about it?

YouTube, again banned

April 4th, 2007

After similar events in Turkey. This seems to keep happening to YouTube due to copyright scandals and calumniator content. Until Google bought it, this was not that much of a big deal but since then all who have something to gain from it can hit Google long and hard on the Youtube subject.

The ban was now established in Thailand, it seems YouTube editors refused to remove some offensive content, even though authorities from Thailand requested it in numerous occasions. As you well know this is not a first, YouTube got banned in the past in countries like Brasil and in state schools in Australia, for similar causes.

And legal matters are not the least of YouTube’s concerns now. Derived from all this copyright problems the video service from Google is facing a great deal of other sites of the kind offer video material that YouTube can’t show anymore. Here are a few examples AllSP or TV links or many more of the same sort that steal a increasing share of YouTube’s visitors.

YouTube is certainly traveling in some black waters, will be Google able to pull it off?

Tubes - 2.0 sharing

March 29th, 2007
tubez2.jpg

Everywhere you turn your head now on the web, you see content labeled as Web 2.0. What exactly Web 2.0 is, cannot be defined as simple, but free and easy sharing are part of it for sure. Attempts to create easy, free information sharing environments were more or less of a success over the years but the way I see it, this is the direction user-sharing is going to.

I’m talking about Tubes, a software that allows you to easily share files in a secured manner. All you have to do is to download the installation pack, and the software (that runs on a .NET framework) will allow you to share content freely with who you want. In order to choose with whom you share content you use the so called ‘tubes’. Create a tube, upload content and invite friends, it’s really simple!

You can upload as much as 2GB of data per tube, and then easily synchronize the online content with your offline folder. I know it all sounds as a big commercial but the functions it provides are great and simple, just the way I like them. Sure there are some drawbacks such my concern for privacy and security given the fact that all the files shared by the ‘tube’ users are replicated on each computer.

All in all Tubes is an interesting software you might want to check out, even if you won’t be using it all day long, it just might do the trick in some situation when you quickly need to share data.

Search engines of the future

March 26th, 2007

For the moment Google is the biggest player when thinking of search engines. But although Google has a good head-start there are lots of search engines out there trying to make it. And I think that these new search engines, that are forced to innovate in order to stand any chance, are the future.

So what can be added to a search engine that Google hasn’t added already? Well some tried more relevant ads, or advanced search features, category searching and even tabbed searching but let’s be honest, how many of them are really successful? There is even a top 100 alternative search engine chart.

But when it comes to it, all that matters is how effective is your engine and how useful are the functions you provide to your users. Practically Twerq.com is not even a search engine by itself, it’s more of an easy way to search the web using existing services like Google and Yahoo! search. And this is where TWERQ shows its best, it has some functions I’ve found quite interesting and useful at the same time, as you can see in this video:

The simple syntax it uses enables you to create relevant searches in no time at all. But the true power of TWERQ comes out when you register and create custom search lists. In this way you can search images, blogs, news, etc in the same time with only one search. It’s really helpful to configure this kind of search domains for information you need daily, it saves lots of time.

So is this the search engine of the future ? Certainly not, but I’m sure that functions like the search syntax and tabbed searching will be part of future search engines.

The Second life phenomenon

March 18th, 2007

This short movie shows my exact point of view regarding Second Life, the MMORPG that lets you play… another life. I can understand why you want to be a hero and kill beasts and such, but why would you want to have a second life? One life is one too much for some people.

New troubles for YouTube

March 13th, 2007
youtube_logol.gif

After the recent victory of YouTube in Turkey, where the online video site was banned two days ago, new problems seem to come upon Google’s service. Since today the ban in Turkey was removed but numerous users from Thailand reported that the YouTube site cannot be accessed.

Surfers in Thailand say they are redirected to the Ministry of Communication and Technology (MICT) site when they want to access YouTube. MICT is the Internet censorship organism in Thailand, but until no there was now official reason for the ban.

I don’t necessarily support YouTube but I think people have the right to be free to watch whatever they want so I hope problems like this will be passed one way or the other.
