1TB Storage Alternative from Maxtor
November 20th, 2006
After presenting you two days ago with 300GB of removable media, I’ve got my hands today on even more brilliant news. Maxtor releases OneTouch III, Turbo Edition that can support up to 1TB of data. Good news, OneTouch III is a hard disk drive ;)
I know what you’re going to ask. The price. Well, as it’s quite new in the field, the retail price is somewhere around 900$, but judging by its capacity, there’s somewhere around $1,1/GB of storage. Again. How could this be possible? The actual machinery is built based on two 500GB HDD’s that work together and end up in being seen as an unitary system.
It’s simple to guess that it has been pre-made for Mac’s, because it comes pre-formatted with Mac’s File System. At a bit further research, I have found out it will support Windows, so there’s no room for disappointment.
Anyway, Maxtor’s future plans include a duo based on 750GB hard drives, but until then, this is the top of the market so far.
They say that no matter the capacity of a disk drive, it will be full sooner or later, but how big is really BIG? Will the 1TB disk make the difference? What do you think about it?

The fact that new large capacity drives come out of the factories every day and it’s not uncommon for desktop PCs to come with 100GB+ solutions out of the box may be a hint for the future of internet developpment and high-badwidth communications… as we have seen in the past, more data (music, movies, information, games, communication) meant an increasing in storage capacity needs for users, an opposite effect may soon appear in wich people hold huge amounts of data and may want to share it, fast…
You should look at the Western Digital 1TB MyBook Drives… I have purchased 2 for work for less than $550 each
They are basically a pair of 500 gig WD drives striped as one.
cheap, fast and has triple interface (USB2, FW400 and FW800) the fan is a little loud, but overall… an excellent product
