GMail is open for everyone!

February 7th, 2007

After a while where subscriptions were only possible in certain countries, GMail has recently announced that it opened registrations for users from across the globe. It has even posted a “Sign up” link on their front page. This comes after GMail experienced problems with German and British domains. Get your address for free, here.

Now I have 50 worthless invitations left.

A discovery by me!…Its still the same old login screen. So it seems to me that this ‘Sign Up’ thing is country-specific, maybe in Europe and States people would be able to ‘Sign Up’ for new accounts but here in my India even after clearing the caches and histories/ checking on different browsers, its still the same old page, Indians need to be ‘Invited’ for using this service, they cant ‘Sign Up’ haha funny…..its true…

    It is still beta…

the signup was possible from the beginning. A few years ago i was reading the docs from gmail.com when i came up over a sign up link…i had it stashed away in some .txt file around my hdd, i`ll look for it and post it, or i can post the page where i got it from…anyway, they kept the invite thingie for 4-5 years because it went well, no one needed the signups, but even so, i just said that the sign up page was open from the beginning but the link wasn`t displayed on the front page…

PS: looked for the link, can`t remember which page it was…but i`m pretty sure about what i said :P

@ Juan It will not be worthless since it is not open on all location.

Most of the Google services are beta actually :)
As far as I know, technically Gmail is out of beta since April, last year, but they didn’t bother to replace the logo. This caused confusion among the users, but honestly, I wouldn’t be more satisfied if the label was off.
