T-Mobile come back with the Samsung Comeback

July 24th, 2009

T-Mobile Samsung Comeback

We haven’t seen a flipout QWERTY phone for quite a while, so it was nice to see T-Mobile showing some faith in the style by unleashing the Samsung Comeback for US$130 with a two year plan and discounts. The Comeback is available in two colour flavours, Frost Silver Cherry and Pearl White Plum and sports a largish LCD display underneath the flip-lid. Here’s what else you get for your money

* 2 Megapixel Camera with Video Capture
* Send and receive e-mail messages
* 3G connectivity
* GPS built-in
* Instant messaging with Yahoo!, Windows Live or AIM
* Micro SD memory slot
* QWERTY keyboard
* Stereo Bluetooth wireless technology
* Alarm clock, Calculator, Calendar, Phone book
* 4.3 x 2.2 x 0.7 inches
* 4.6 oz
* 5.5 hours of talk time
* 12 days of standby time
* Frequencies 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz, UMTS

US$130 is a lot for what is really ‘just’ a cellphone, with smartphones not costing much more, you have to think ‘Why, T-Mobile, why?’. May be they are just hanckering after the good old days of QWERTY flippa models and of course if you are too then the Samsung Comeback could just be the cellphone you are looking for.

However Our Picks gives the T-Mobile Samsung Comeback a big thumbs down, units like this are practically free these days and with something like the Nokia E71x available for only $100 over at AT&T you do indeed have to think why? May be the QWERTY flippa market is stronger than we all thought.

T-Mobile launch Samsung Memoir aka SGH-T929

February 5th, 2009

T-Mobile Samsung Memoir

T-Mobile have just announced that they will be launching the Samsung Memoir (aka SGH-T929) later this month. The Memoir sports a spiffy 8 Mp camera so sits squarely on the cellphone/camera fence. Other details including a price tag are scarce to say the least but here’s what we do know

* 3G connectivity
* TouchWiz touchscreen interface
* virtual QWERTY keyboard
* HTML browser
* messaging and email
* music player
* GPS
* Bluetooth connectivity

But of course it’s the camera that will sell the Memoir, hence there will be direct uploading to Flickr, PhotoBucket and Snapfish. The camera will also capture video, sport a 16x zoom and have a Xenon flash. There’s a rumour at electronista that the price will be around US$300 even with a two year contract. We’re hoping that’s not true, cos for any unit that straddles two tech arenas there are usually shortcomings in both and $300 seems a bit much for a cellphone/camera combo.

T-Mobile’s 2009 Shadow smartphone out there

January 29th, 2009

T-Mobile Shadow 2009

T-Mobile has just unleashed the 2009 version of their WinMo smartphone, the Shadow. It actually looks kinda cool with its ‘White Mint’ body and cool looks are not normally associated with a smartphone, especially on a previous Shadow version. The unit has a slide out 20 key QWERTY keyboard and a 2.2 inch QVGA display. Here are the rest of the bells and whistles

* Wi-Fi and Mobile calling with seamless switching
* 2.0 Mp camera (video capable)
* Stereo Bluetooth connectivity
* MS Outlook synch
* Send and receive emails
* Picture and Text messaging
* Micro SD slot for memory expansion
* Yahoo, MSN and AOL Instant Messaging
* EDGE & Wi-Fi connectivity
* Music player
* 2.1 x 4.1 x 0.6 inches
* 5.3 oz
* Up to 7 hours of talk time
* Up to 7 days of stand by time
* 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz quad band connectivity

The stand out feature of the Shadow has to be the price tag though. Rocking in at US$150 after auto rebate and mail-in rebate but of course with the obligatory 2 year plan. Not bad for a smartphone and a cool looking one at that. Yeah, we like the Shadow, but do you?

If you’re still having doubts, here’s a video clip of the T-Mobile Shadow at CES 2009 from MobileBurn

Blackberry Curve 8900 at T-Mobile in February

January 7th, 2009

T-Mobile Blackberry Curve 8900

Although not available until February, there’s good news for T-Mobile customers hankering after the Blackberry Curve 8900. Come the second month of the year, the Curve 8900 will be available at T-Mobile sporting the following bells and whistles

* 480 x 360 res 2.44 inch display
* 3.2 mp still and video camera
* QWERTY keyboard
* 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi connectivity
* supports up to 10 email addresses
* built-in GPS
* Media Player supporting DivX, XviD (MPEG4 Advance Simple Profile), H.263, WMV3, .3gp, WAV, MIDI, AMR-NB, G711u/A, GSM610, PCM, MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+, WMA9/10 Standard/Pro
* Blackberry Maps
* 109 x 60 x 13.5 mm
* 5.5 hours talktime
* 15 days standby
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity

Well, certainly a nice set of specs on the Curve 8900 but unfortunately no price tag yet. Over in Canada, they can get their hands on this little sucker for between $200 and $600 Canadian depending on the associated plan. This price range currently converts to a range of US$170 to US$500. If this simplistic conversion holds true, those prices are bad considering the functionality on the Curve. So start saving now as we think this will sell like the proverbial hot cakes come February!
