The $25,000 computer mouse

January 24th, 2007

diamondflower

Now here’s a little gadget that aims directly to those that really have money to spend. However, that doesn’t keep us, mortals, to have a look. What you can see in the picture is the world’s most expensive mouse, that costs ~$25,000. The retail price is set at 18,600 Euro.

The product is called the Diamond Flower and is being produced by Pat Says Now. You might be wondering why a simple concept as a computer mouse can be so expensive. Well, 59 brilliants are scattered all over the mouse’s surface. Also the main surface is made out of 18-K white gold. Out of the 59 stones I mentioned, one is about 4mm in diameter, practically doubling the others.

After reading a few details on the producer’s website, I noticed that technically speaking, the gadget is just a plain old computer mouse. Has 3 buttons, a scrolling wheel, PS/2-USB connectivity PC or MAC. What I’m showing you in the picture is the scattered version of the mouse, but its name (Diamond Flower) comes from another designed version of the product, one whose brilliants are arranged to form a flower silhouette.

Personally, even if I’d have that much money to practically throw away, I wouldn’t spend them on this kind of a gadget. What about you?

Keyboard that glows in the dark

January 21st, 2007

glowinthedark

Now you can light up your Quake sessions between friends. I’m going to review the Zippy EL-610 USB keyboard. In its essence, it’s a notebook style keyboard, with a low keystroke and with a special feature. The buttons will glow in the dark, lightening up your keyboard when it’s dark in the room. As you can see in the picture, the light has a blue nuance.

Behind the 88-translucent keys is a flat sheet of electro-luminescent material - the same stuff that puts the glow in “Indiglo” which lights up watch faces around the world.

Like I mentioned, the keyboard should be connected to your USB plug, to receive power, and its main purpose is usage in environments where there is insufficient light. Being only 18mm thick and weighting less than 500g, it would be a great asset to any travel bag. No software is required for this keyboard to work on Windows 2000 or WindowsXP platforms which have at least one USB port free.

The electro-luminescent light generates no heat, but it creates a little imperceptible buzz sound that you hear when you’re a first time users. By using it everyday on a regular basis you finally get to automatically ignore the sound.

Despite my thinking, they’re not expensive. The cheapest I’ve found goes up to ~$45 and the most expensive retails around $60.

The half keyboard - weird, easy, different

January 21st, 2007

halfkeyboard

I’ve wrote about many types of keyboards so far, but this is an interesting concept. The Half Keyboard is a one-handed version of the standard desktop keyboard. It uses full-size, high-quality laptop-style keys for excellent typing comfort and speed.

The product in the picture is designed for people that want to type with their left hand. If you want to use your right hand or use them both alternatively, there’s also the 508 keyboard. The 508 Keyboard gives you the best of both worlds one-hand and two-hand typing. It’s a full-size, standard keyboard and it lets you decide whatever is more convenient.

So, how does it actually work? All you have to do is place your hand on the keyboard, in the standard position. If you take a closer look, the letters under your hand are exactly the same letters on your regular keyboard. Cool, the job is half done so far. How about the other half? Well, to reach the second half, you’ll have to press SPACE, and there we go. Should you need to type a space, tap the key.

You shouldn’t be expecting a high typing rate, especially if you’re a beginner, but the analysts say that after 30 hours of using the Half Keyboard, you can type up to ~88% of your regular typing speed. You decide if it’s worth it or not.

Sleeping with your iPod

January 19th, 2007

ipodpillow

Here’s another cute thing. A pillow in the shape of an iPod, for loves that don’t want to be separated from their iPods when sleeping. Now you can literally say “I slept with my iPod last night”.

I must admit it’s a good idea. The last time I heard about it, pricing and availability were unknown to the source, but now, at a quick glance, you can buy the pillow from Kleargear for only $20.

If you expect to find a fully functional iPod inside the pillow, I must disappoint you. There isn’t any. On the other hand, it DOES have a built-in FM scan radio with audio speaker, and you DO have the possibility of connecting it to your personal iPod, CD player, computer or other audio device and enjoy great soundings.

The buttons you see in the image are not there for decorations only. They’re fully functional too. Press POWER to turn on the radio, press SCAN to change the radio station, press RADIO/MP3 to change between the radio or portable music source plugged into the jack cord, and press RESET to restore the factory settings. The volume can be adjusted by pressing the red up and down triangles on either side of VOLUME.

Shaped like an iPod, the soft pillow is white with a shiny blue screen, gray click wheel and a silver back design. It uses 2 AA batteries and it’s 16″ high by 9″ wide. Amazing, isn’t it?

A cell phone with rearrangeable keys!

January 18th, 2007

gmea

It’s nice to see that the mobile phone market is developing as each day passes by. However, this is something unique, something that I haven’t seen so far. The picture on the left shows a cell phone phone whose keys can be re-arranged, as in a puzzle game.

It’s called GMEA and it’s being described as “the first ever real game phone” (GMEA are the initials of that phrase in Russian). It’s not barely close to N-Gage or a Nintendo DS, but the base idea is very innovative. Let’s talk about the slogan for a few. Upon reading, you would expect some fantastic games with terrific gameplay inside. Wrong. It’s not the phone that has the games, it’s the actual phone that IS the game, and let me tell you why.

The concept is quite simple. The phone’s keypad is interactive and the buttons are extremely movable. It’s just like in that little logic game, where you had a square full of random numbers and you had to put them in order, by sliding one number square at a time into the empty space. Just so that you don’t forget where each key’s right spot is, the right positions are marked underneath so that you can move them back to their original place. Apart from this special ‘ability’ this phone has that can probably keep you busy for hours and hours, it comes in a slim case and looks pretty good too.

It’s creator is a Russian designer called Dima Komissarov, and the project will be only a concept for quite a while, most likely.
