With all the hullabaloo going on over the MacBook Air, Fujitsu have launched an even lighter UMPC, the LifeBook P1620. Weighing in at 1 kg it beats the Air by 360g and the basic model costs roughly the same at US$1,749. Here are a few more details for you to check out
* 1.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
* 512 MB RAM
* 60 GB 1.8 inch HDD
* 8.9 inch touch screen display
* 802.11a/g/b connectivity
* Windows XP Tablet Edition
* Fingerprint sensor
* Two USB 2.0 ports
* PCMCIA slot
* 3 cell Lithium ion battery
An extra US$350 or so gets you a 6 cell battery and a 1 GB of RAM but adds an extra 150g to the weight. I must admit that the LifeBook doesn’t appeal, the HTC Shift seems to offer a very similar unit for considerably less wallet liner and even that didn’t really get me too excited. So I get the impression that with the MacBook Air creating so much (unjustified?) buzz at the moment that other notebook manufacturers are desperately shoving out new product just to compete with Apple.

Joining the rest of the gang are Fujitsu with their very own 320 GB 2.5 inch HDD, the MHZ2 BH. This little puppy spins around at 5,400 rpm, sports a 3 Gb/s SATA interface and only sucks 1.9 watts when transferring your zeroes and ones.
Fujitsu are primarily aiming the MHZ2 BH at compact desktops, laptops and HDD recorders as the ever increasing consumer need for disk space grows.
There’s currently no price tag around this baby’s neck and the unit won’t be available until Feb 2008 but we can still dream, eh? Here are a few more specs from Fujitsu.
* Average seek time 12ms (read) 14ms (write)
* 300 MB/s transfer rate
* 9.5 x 70 x 100 mm
* 101 g

The boffins over at Fujitsu Computer Products of America have managed to cram even more zeroes and ones on to a hard drive platter. Later this week Fujitsu will announce that
it has created ideally “ordered” alumina nanohole patterns for isolated bit-by-bit recording on a large disk area
according to ComputerWorld. What this all means is that hopefully around 2010 Fujitsu will be producing a dual platter 2.5 inch drive with a massive 1.2 TB of storage for your laptop.
How have they managed to squeeze all that data in you may ask, well you can check out the more technical stuff in the article itself if you are that way inclined - I tried and my eyes started to glaze over but then again I hadn’t had my first coffee of the day.
Aside from being able to cram more movies critical business data onto your laptop the drives will consume less power and require less cooling than larger drives which means Fujitsu get a gold green star for all their effort.
I also did a quick bit of math on these suckers and came up with a figure of 31.3 GB per square inch for the Fujitsu boys. This compares very favourably with the current consumer-available figure of 6.37 GB/sq in of the Western Digital 250GB Scorpio drive.
