iPhone look alikes are all the rage right now, in fact have been since the iPhone was unleashed. Not wanting to miss out on the craze, Philips have announced the X800 a full-touch mobile phone sporting the following unimpressive specs
* full touch-screen
* tri-band GSM/GPRS handset
* 2.9 inch 240 x 400 262K color TFT display
* handwriting recognition
* 2 MP AF camera
* microSD slot
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* 850 hours standby
* 8 hours talk-time
* plays mp3/mpeg4/wav/aac files
We must admit that the X800 does look pretty sexy despite the similarity to the ‘other’ phone but the specs are a bit disappointing. The exception is the battery times which are impressive to say the least. So we’re hoping the price tag will match the low specs - unfortunately there’s no official word on that particular specification from Philips as of yet.
The rumour is that the Motorola W755 clamshell will effectively be given away free when you purchase it along with a Verizon two year shackle plan. And judging by the specs we can see why they may well be tossing these out like candy at Halloween
* CDMA dual band (800/1900 MHz)
* 3G Capable
* 1.3 MP camera with video capturing functionality
* plays mp3 and acc audio files with touch-sensitive buttons
* 80MB memory
* microSD slot
* predictive text
* mini USB connectivity
* 1.2 stereo bluetooth connectivity
Yeah, nothing to phone write home about, so if you’re up for a cell phone to just make phone calls on - ooh, how retro - the Motorola W755 at Verizon may just be the deal for you! The phone will be launched in early May and sport either a grey casing or a potentially vomit inducing purple version.
You lucky Europeans, Samsung has decided to launch their ‘flagship product’, the ‘Soul’ mobile phone on your very shores before letting it loose over the rest of the globe. Starting later this month, this little sucker will hit the shelves of cellphone retailers all over the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. Here’s the low-down on the Samsung ‘Soul’
* Quad-band HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
* 5 MP camera with auto-focus and 4x digital zoom
* 2.2 inch QVGA display
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* Plays mp3 and wma files
* 105.9 x 49.5 x 12.9 mm
The unit is available in three colours, Sterling Steel, Soul Gray and Platinum Silver and will retail for around 400 euros (US$630).
Judging by the amount of interest in our original Verizon Coupe post, it seems a lot of you are quite keen on this phone. So we thought we’d track down a video review of the Coupe to show it in all its $20 glory.
The reviewer, Phone Scoop, aren’t overly impressed with the it but we sort of think what do you expect for US$20. They do make a good point about the ICE buttons being too close to a couple of other buttons which bizarrely are duplicated elsewhere, but otherwise it’s a great little phone for some one who doesn’t want a user guide the size of War and Peace but wants the security of knowing they can quickly contact friends or family in case of emergency. And did we mention it’s only US$20 too?
No, Panasonic’s Viera P905iTV is not a snazzy new HD TV, it’s a mobile phone which sports a display with TV-esque specifications. The boys over at Panasonic have grabbed their TV making skills and shoved them into a mobile phone, hence the Viera moniker. Check these impressive specs
* 3.5 inch 854 x 480 res display
* 30 fps playback
* 4,000:1 contrast ratio
* TV out port
Oh yeah, you can use it as a mp3 playing camera phone too
* HSDPA connectivity
* Audio output port
* 2 MP camera
* SDHC memory slot
Panasonic are also boasting 660 hours on standby before this sucker needs to be re-juiced. This figure drops down to 160 minutes if you’re watching TV. The P905iTV certainly has all the bells and whistles for a multi-media fanatic who talks a lot, however two downers unless you live in Japan and/or have oodles of cash, no word on a price, but don’t expect this to become this year’s stocking filler at Christmas, and it’s only currently available in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Personally, I’d struggle to watch the SuperBowl on this thing, but for news and current affairs proggies, it could just do the trick.
Possibly the cheapest cellphone around, the Verizon Wireless Coupe rocks in at a measly US$20 plus a two year contract of course. However with such a low price tag it comes without all the bells and whistles, so yes it’s a cellphone on which you just make phone calls, sort of retro without the retro look fortunately.
So what does the Coupe give you for your twenty bucks, well, it boasts a colour screen, speakerphone, texting and voice dialling. It also has three big red ICE (In Case of Emergency) keys just below the display which can be programmed with emergency numbers such as a family member, friend or local pizza delivery firm ;)
Along with the ICE keys and a ’simplified menu with large font’ the Coupe is obviously aimed at the more mature consumer, this kind of limited functionality would only keep a teen occupied for about 5 seconds before the phone ends up in the trash. Nice idea having three emergency numbers programmed into large obvious keys and there’s a separate button for 911 as well. The unit is colour-coded with the volume controls being white, the charging port cover red and the headset port blue.
So if you’re trying to think of a suitable gift for an elderly family member the Coupe could just be the answer.
There appears to much ado about the latest cellphone offering from HTC called ‘Touch’ in the tech blog world at the moment. It’s being touted as a potential competitor to the iPhone and with its whizzy ‘TouchFLO’ technology you may think that HTC are onto something here. Certainly a few sites believe so
HTC Corp. has just launched the HTC Touch, a smartphone whose fingertip-oriented control system was clearly created to compete with Apple’s iPhone.
However I’m not so easily convinced, sure the Touch looks good in ‘wasabi’ and ’soft black’ colour choices but what about the numbers, how does it really stack up against the iPhone. Well let’s take a peek at them shall we?

Sure the Touch is smaller and lighter but at the guts of it there’s less memory for your tunes and less visual display for your vids. The final kicker, how much moola will I have to part with to be Touched? It will sell in Europe for 449 Euros which is about US$600, the price of an 8GB iPhone. Hmmm, brave try HTC but I don’t think Apple execs will be Touching the alarm button with this release. Roll on June 29th.
