It was almost two years ago when we were banging on about the Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 7 home entertainment package. So it’s taken the marketing department at B&O that long to pull finger and give this unit a bit of Hi-Def love by replacing the DVD player with a shiny new Blu-Ray player. At last we hear all the B&O fans rejoice! Here are the rest of the bits and pieces on the BeoVision 7-40 entertainment unit
* DVB-HD module
* 108cm x 68cm x 18cm (not including stand)
* 45 kg
* 40 inch 16:9 1920 x 1080 res LCD HD display
* Handles Dolby Digital 5.1/6.1 EX, Dolby 7.1 EX, Dolby Pro-Logic ll/llx, DTS 5.1. DTS ES 6.1, DTS Neo:6, AAC audio formats
The B&O website is a bit thin on details about the BeoVision 7-40, however there is plenty of marketing blurb including mention of the motorised stand this unit sports
The motorised table and floor stands will turn the TV through a 70° arc at a touch of a button and the screen can be tilted vertically to achieve the best possible viewing angle.
Sounds good, eh? But wait there’s more there’s even an ‘usher’ to help you change discs
And like the usher in a movie theatre guiding you to your seat, a small light comes on to make sure that you can load the disc while keeping the room lights low.
OK, may be that’s taking the marketing a bit too far, but hey this is a Bang & Olufsen unit and one thing they don’t skimp on is marketing spiel and another is the price tag. The BeoVision 7-40 rocks in at US$13500 this month. Ouch, for that kind of money we’d want much more than a 40 inch display and motorised stand thank you very much. But B&O do have a niche market, their gear does look different and is reputedly of high quality so somebody will fork out the dosh for the BeoVision 7-40. If it’s you, let us know what you think.

Combining your phone and mp3 player seems to be a very popular option at the moment. Samsung have just launched their latest offering in this market, the F400, which according to Samsung is
Fully equipped with ICEpower® technology by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower
So with the help of B&O, Samsung have cranked out a not too shabby dual slider phone/music player with the following bits and bobs
* stereo speakers
* 3 MP AF camera
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* 1GB micro SD card with appropriate slot (up to 8GB expansion)
* 3.5mm output jack
* FM radio
* HSDPA Tri-band 3.6 Mbps
* 2.2 inch display
* USB 2.0 connectivity to allow the unit to be used as a mass storage device
* 103.2 x 48.2 x 16.9 mm
Strangely there’s no joy for US Samsung fans as France will be the first to see the F400 in May, later followed by Europe, Asia and the Middle East. May be Samsung feel it lacks the features to make it in the US market? Whatever the reason is, the associated price tag should be low as there’s nothing really special on the unit other than a rather sexy design. All in all a bit of a sad phone really.

This post isn’t for the fiscally-challenged my friends, so look away now if the inside of your wallet hasn’t seen the light of day for a while. Despite looking sexy and no doubt sporting their usual high standard in sound quality the latest DAP from Bang & Olufsen, the BeoSound 6 will set you back six hundred big ones. I’ll give you a moment to get over the shock …. yes a DAP for more than an iPhone, what are they thinking? Well, quality over quantity as usual with B&O. Your $600 gets you a 4GB mp3 player with 40 hours of battery life, which talks nicely to both Mac and PCs. It sports a small 128 x 160 res screen that doesn’t play vid and comes with a slim fit leather case which conveniently hides the A8 earphones that come with the unit when not in use.
So what about the quality I hear you asking, well according to the blurb
Its superior sound performance rivals that of home audio systems. When compared
to other MP3 players, BeoSound 6 has a very clear and pure CD sound
quality, due to its high performance on signal to noise playback.
Hmm, whilst I’m sure the masses won’t be beating a path to their nearest B&O dealership to pick up one of these puppies, there will be B&O fans out there who’ll be happy spending the pingers on the unit. And just in case those fans do have more money than sense some hard-earned cash left over then they can grab the bluetooth headset EarSet2 for a snip at US$350 too.
If anyone out there does have one of these suckers then let us know if the quality really is worth six hundred dollars.

Having given us the Serene,
Bang & Olufsen and
Samsung perform another amazing duet to give us the
Serenata a uniquely designed music player and mobile phone. The device uses a simple scroll wheel interface to select your favourite tunes and to make calls to your friends to let them know you’ve paid out for one of these babies. The Serenata plays nicely with both PCs and Macs via USB and will talk to iTunes with some software available at the B&O website. The unit has a built in speaker so is a mini music system in its own right and for more private moments the unit comes with the ergonomic EarSet 3 which fit ’so snug, you’ll hear notes which would otherwise never make it to your ear’. To make calls and send messages the Serenata has a ’sensi-touch display’ and the scroll wheel will navigate you through menus and messages.
The phone sports GSM 900, 1800, 1900 and WCDMA 2100 and has a 3 hour talk time and 280 hours on standby. The display is a square 2.26 inch 240 x 240 res and bluetooth connectivity is available for a headset etc. On the tunes side of the spec there’s 4 GB of memory, 5 hours of speaker playback, 13 hours on headset and the unit supports mp3, wma and the rare wma lossless format.
The styling is well, what you’d expect from Bang & Olufsen and so unfortunately is the price rocking in at around US$2000. So for all its flash looks and great sound quality I don’t think these will be selling like hot cakes more like stylish, fashionable cakes. Check it out and listen to some mellow tunes at the Serenata website.

The clever guys at Bang & Olufsen this week launched the
BeoVision 7, their latest home theatre centre with integrated DVD player, digital surround sound module plus a widescreen 40 inch LCD HDTV. We probably wouldn’t expect anything less from B&O but they insist we should expect more by providing us with a few extra whizzy features
- When BeoVision 7 is switched on, the TV automatically adjusts the picture quality to match the current light conditions — and continues to do so until the television is switched off.
- BeoVision 7 features a motorized floor stand and wall bracket, giving complete freedom to tilt and turn the screen from one’s viewing position with a simple touch on the remote control
- The vertical BeoLab 7-4 loudspeaker provides incredible precision and acoustic clarity of the voice track of a film or television program. Utilizing the patented Acoustic Lens Technology, BeoLab 7-4 ensures a perfect sound dispersion from the treble at an even 180 degrees throughout the room.
On the downside it will have a price tag of US$13,250 with an extra $500 to $1000 for one of the stand options when it hits the US this summer. So it’s not something you’d be popping out to buy on a whim but I must admit it does look pretty sexy and as with B&O gear has a unique look to it.
