MSI unleash the X600 Slim laptop

August 26th, 2009

MSI X600 Slim laptop

At a slimline 0.9 inches thick the MSI X600 laptop is certainly a neat little unit considering it still manages to squeeze in the following bits and pieces in its small frame

* 1.4GHz Penryn SFF C2S ULV SU3500 Processor
* 4GB DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM
* 320GB SATA Hard Drive
* Windows Vista Home Premium
* 6 Cell Battery
* 15.6″ WXGA 16:9 1366×768 res LCD display
* Graphics 512 MB
* 10.03 x 15.4 x 0.9 inches
* 4.6 lbs

The X600 certainly looks the part with that line-up and it has a pretty cool price tag of US$900 too. As usual with slimline laptops, there is no internal optical drive but the rest of the specs certainly look impressive. If you’ve taken a closer look at the MSI X600 then please let us know what you think.

Update: The X600 is on special over at Amazon for only $799.

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB HDD at Amazon

August 18th, 2009

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB HDD

Disk space just seems to be getting cheaper these days, and whilst the Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB HDD has been out a while, we couldn’t believe the price of US$85 on it at Amazon. If you’re looking to upgrade your HDD then the Caviar seems like a good option with it receiving 4.5 stars out of 5 in customer reviews which tended to promote it’s power efficiency and quietness but highlighted a possible (if negligible) performance loss. For your US$85 you get no cables or power adaptor but if this is to be a replacement unit you may well not require them. Here are some details and specs on the Caviar Green 1TB HDD

* WD has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard desktop drives
* GreenPower technology yields lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives
* 1 TB capacity
* 3.5 inch form factor
* 7200 rpm spin speed
* 32 MB Buffer size
* 5.8 x 4 x 1 inches
* 1.6 lbs

Whilst the 1 TB Caviar Green may not be the latest HDD unit on the street, this US$85 deal at Amazon has to be one of the sweetest HDD deals around. That is, of course, unless you know different ….

Samsung YP-P2 available at Amazon

September 24th, 2007

Samsung YP-P2I thought I’d take a peek at the Samsung YP-P2, their latest offering in the touch screen media player arena. This little sucker is already available for pre-order over at Amazon. Here are some specs for you to inwardly digest

* 8 GB flash memory
* Bluetooth connectivity for speakers and headphones
* Widescreen 3 inch 428 x 240 res display
* 30 hours of tunes or 5 hours of vid from a fully charged battery
* FM radio
* Touch screen functionality
* Weight 2.8 oz

Sounds good? Well at US$250 it does sound like a bargain. But lets see how it stacks up against other well known models in the PMP market.

For an extra $50 you can grab an 8 GB iPod Touch which has a larger screen at 3.5 inches with 480 x 320 res but does weigh more at 4.2 oz. The iPod also only boasts a mere 22 hours of audio with a full battery but it does support Wi-fi connectivity.

The 8 GB iRiver X20 is floating around for $330 and of course has a microSD slot to increase its capacity so it may be a bit unfair to line it up against the others but here goes anyway! Its screen is a bit on the small size at 2.2 inches and is only slightly lighter than the Samsung at 2.5 oz so an extra $80 seems a bit much to pay for expandability.

So the Samsung doesn’t look too bad compared to the Apple and iRiver offerings, what do you think, or even better if there are any users of any of these models feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts!
