Philips Cinema 21:9 TV

It had to happen sooner or later and to be honest, we thought it would have happened before now. But at last here’s a TV that will display a movie in its true format - 21:9 ratio. Philips will be unleashing this sucker, tentatively named Cinema 21:9, in the spring on cinematic enthusiasts through out Germany, Belgium, France and the UK. No US launch date or any pricing details available at the moment, so for now you have only the press release and image to drool over. It’s a staggering 56 inch LCD HDTV unit and here’s what Philips have to say about it.

Philips breaks new ground in the realm of home entertainment with the world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD television. Cinema 21:9 lets you enjoy movies as you would in the cinema and just as the director intended. Cinema 21:9 boasts a 56” screen that is shaped in the 21:9 aspect ratio, so movies in the 2.39:1 format completely fill the screen – exactly as you experience at the cinema. Complimentary three-sided Ambilight Spectra combines with the on-screen action to completely immerse you in the movie and deliver the ultimate home cinematic viewing experience.

We’re not going to point out that the ratio 21:9 is not the same as 2.39:1 as the missing 0.06 is probably neither here nor there. And despite this ‘flaw’ we will welcome the Philips Cinema 21:9 with open arms for the moment but we’ll let you know at the end of January when the unit is finally launched whether we’re still so happy as then we’ll find out the oh-so important price tag. We’re gonna assume ‘not cheap’.
