ZVOX Z-Base 550 TV stand

Cunninngly disguised as a TV stand, ZVOX’s Z-Base 550 surround sound system takes the soundbar concept top the next level. The whole unit measures 28 inches wide by 14.5 deep and stands 3.5 inches high, small enough to be inconspicuous but large enough (and strong enough too hopefully) to handle a 50 inch flat screen TV atop of it. As with all soundbar’s you’ve got to question the actual ’surround’ sound quality but as combo concepts go the TV stand cum audio system is pretty cool. Here are a few more bits and pieces on the Z-Base 550.

* ZVOX proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround system
* 20 lbs
* 60 Watt amp
* Two rear “mixing” inputs
* 5.25″ subwoofer uses a high-mass long-throw design in a ported enclosure
* Five 2 ” main speaker drivers use ferrofluid and neodymium magnets to create remarkably loud, remarkably clear sound

To be honest we’re not totally convinced by these soundbars ability to reproduce true surround sound but if you’re short of space then the ZVOX Z-Base 550 could be just what you’re looking for. Or if you’re short of cash, as this little sucker rocks in at a neat US$500. Not so un-sexy now, eh?
