E-Ten Glofiish M800 unleashed

November 17th, 2007

E-Ten Glofiish M800

I’m not sure how cool or uncool it would be to say, ‘Hey, I’ve got the latest Glofiish’, but the latest offering from E-Ten, the Glofiish M800 sure looks the part even if the name doesn’t quite make the grade.

The M800 is basically an upgrade from the X800 offering an additional sliding QWERTY keypad missing on its predecessor. Most of the other bells and whistles however are as the X800

* Samsung S3C2442 500MHz CPU
* micro SD card slot
* 2.8 inch touchscreen with 480×640 res
* 113.8 x 57.8 x 18.4 mm
* 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* MS Windows Mobile 6
* GSM and UMTS/3G support
* 2 MP camera plus an additional camera for vid calls

You can get your grubby little mits on an unlocked version of one of these suckers over at Expansys for a mere US$750, $50 less than its competitor the HTC TyTN II. I’m not that the Glofiish M800 will be a world-beater be it sure looks attractive right now.

LG’s 52 inch 1080p LCD WiFi TV

November 15th, 2007

LG 52LG71 LCD WiFi TV

Now this puppy looks like a winner. LG have just launched a 52 inch 1080p LCD TV with 802.11n WiFi connectivity enabling you to stream HD content across your home network and onto this sucker.

Unfortunately with no pricing or launch date there are still a few key loose ends left to be tied up, but the 52LG71 LCD TV could be an awesome addition to any home entertainment setup at any cost.

T-Mobile Sidekick Slide

November 12th, 2007

T-Mobile Sidekick SlideYet another mobile out there for US$200 with a two year plan. This time it’s the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide with a sliding screen no less plus all the following bits and pieces

* QWERTY keypad
* Email, text, pxt and instant messaging
* 1.3 MP camera
* Bluetooth connectivity
* Speakerphone
* Micro SD slot
* Quad-band GSM
* 5 hours talk time and 3 days on standby
* Support for AAC, MP3 and WMA formats

To be honest the Slide offers no more than any other $200 phone out there, in fact a 1.3 MP camera seems to be a bit of a rip-off, however if you like the sliding screen it just may be your cup of tea. But I don’t really think this phone will fulfill even the average mobile user’s needs and T-Mobile have dropped the ball with this offering at that price. The Sidekick Slide could one of the first to get a price cut in the build up to Christmas.

Verizon unleash the LG Venus

November 9th, 2007

If you’re keen as to get your hands on an LG Venus from Verizon then head on over to their website for your pre-order today for the November 19th release of the black version. A pink version will appear on December 11th. US$200 will get you one of these suckers along with an accompanying two year plan, a standalone version will set you back $350.

So what about the bells and whistles? Well here’s the low-down

* 2 mp camera
* microSD storage up to 8 GB
* stereo bluetooth support
* plays nicely with MP3, WMA, AAC, & AAC+ formats
* speakerphone
* touch screen for system navigation

So nothing major really and $200 seems a pretty standard figure (with a two year plan) for these kind of phones at the moment. So unless you’re desperate for one, I’d wait until the Christmas rush to see if prices tumble.

SMC release Barricade wireless 802.11n router

November 6th, 2007

SMC Barricade WBR14S-N2 wireless router
Now you’ve bought one of those wonderful network storage devices you’re going to need a network that’s up to speed literally with those large data files. Well SMC have just released a wireless 802.11n router, the Barricade WBR14S-N2, to meet your speed needs. This little sucker will send files around your home or office network at up to 300 Mbps and over four times the range of an equivalent 802.11g network, so you’ll probably be sharing your files with your neighbour too :)

Whilst the 802.11n standard is readily available in other makes and models, the WBR14S-N2 comes with a price tag of US$60 and couple that with SMC’s Wireless USB 2.0 adapter (WUSBS-N) at $US40, you can hook up an 802.11n network for a snip under $100.

So what other bells and whistles do these puppies have? 4 port 10/100 LAN switch, WPA and WPA2 encryption, NAT/SPI firewall and a web-based management interface. Nothing to write home about, but surely the price tag alone merits a letter to mom.

Samsung launch next gen Solid State Drives

November 5th, 2007

Samsung 64 GB SSD

And speedy little blighters they are too. But before we get talk about their speed just a note that the top capacity is still 64 GB so the drives are still only useful for notebooks and high-end desktops. Their price will be prohibitive too, but less of the negativity and back to their speed!

Well this latest gen of SSDs from Samsung has a sequential write speed of 100 MBps and sequential read of 120 MBps. This blows the old gen speeds of 45 and 65 right out of the water. The boffins over at Samsung have managed this by using a super-fast SATA interface

Samsung’s SATA II SSD combines a 50 nm-class, single-level-cell (SLC) 8Gb flash chip with a Samsung proprietary, high-speed SATA controller and supporting software.

Not only do you get faster speeds but the drives use less than half as much power as current notebook PCs so you get to save the planet at the same time.

So whilst these drives aren’t exactly mainstream yet, with this amount of time and effort (and money of course) being spent by drive manufacturers, they obviously believe that SSD are indeed the way forward.

MOTO Q Global unleashed on AT&T

November 4th, 2007

Motorola Q9hThe Motorola Q9h has seen the light of day over at AT&T as the MOTO Q Global. The full QWERTY unit looks a wee bit cumbersome as all full QWERTY models tend to do, but certainly sports some funky features behind that wide exterior.

* Windows Mobile 6
* 3G support
* 2MP camera with flash
* Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity
* 9 hours of talk time on battery and 30 days standby
* MicroSD memory expandable up to 32 GB
* Quad-band support (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
* Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA support

If you opt for the two year shackle plan then with a mail in rebate this little sucker will only set up back US$200, however if you prefer to be free-spirited the standalone unit costs US$500. Whilst the Q Global certainly has all the bells and whistles, I’m not sure that a $500 price tag will make it appealing to non-AT&T customers, however for those already committed to them it will have a certain attraction with a $200 tag.
