The HTC Touch compared to the iPhone
June 6th, 2007
There appears to much ado about the latest cellphone offering from HTC called ‘Touch’ in the tech blog world at the moment. It’s being touted as a potential competitor to the iPhone and with its whizzy ‘TouchFLO’ technology you may think that HTC are onto something here. Certainly a few sites believe so
HTC’s touch-screen handset could give iPhone a run for its money
HTC Corp. has just launched the HTC Touch, a smartphone whose fingertip-oriented control system was clearly created to compete with Apple’s iPhone.
However I’m not so easily convinced, sure the Touch looks good in ‘wasabi’ and ’soft black’ colour choices but what about the numbers, how does it really stack up against the iPhone. Well let’s take a peek at them shall we?

Sure the Touch is smaller and lighter but at the guts of it there’s less memory for your tunes and less visual display for your vids. The final kicker, how much moola will I have to part with to be Touched? It will sell in Europe for 449 Euros which is about US$600, the price of an 8GB iPhone. Hmmm, brave try HTC but I don’t think Apple execs will be Touching the alarm button with this release. Roll on June 29th.

There are some areas where the HTC Touch is clearly better than the Iphone. Here are 10 reasons:
1) Smaller volume.
2) The smaller screen means much easier one-handed usage, and the gestures seems to be aimed at one-handed usage.
3) Removable battery
4) Removable storage.
5) Works with Napster, Rhapsody and Yahoo music store, and will play non DRM AAC’s from Apple.
6) 20 000 third party apps, such as list makers, diet apps, fertility cycles and such consumer stuff
7) A2DP means the increasingly popular bluetooth headphones will work without any issue.
8) Soft touch paint means it wont slip out of your hands and smash your screen, like is inevitable with the slippery iphone.
Business features such as:
9) Exchange push e-mail.
10) Remote device lock and device wipe.
Thats enough for now.
The price will probably be close to free on contract in Europe, whereas the Iphone is completely unsubsidized, on the insistence of Apple.
