The Acid2 Test - Will Internet Explorer be the last one who does not pass it?

January 13th, 2007

The Acid2 test is developed by The Web Standards Project, in order to point out flaws in HTML/CSS rendering engines in browsers. So far, several browsers have managed to pass the test, including Opera, Mac’s Safari and the less known Konqueror. Here are some of the results that show up in different browsers:

The test is simple. Basically, it has to display an image of a smiley face along with “Hello world!”. Here is a sample of what should show up:

And here’s what some of the browsers display:

Opera
Opera actually passed the Acid2 test, becoming the first wide-spread browser to do so.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0
Firefox doesn’t pass the test in the 2.0 stage, but it’s not far from it.

“Gran Paradiso”
Gran Paradiso is the Alpha1 version of Mozilla Firefox 3.0. Scheduled for launch this summer, Gran Paradiso comes even closer to passing the Acid2 test.

It is known that Firefox 3.0 will pass the Acid2 test, so we can expect that its Alpha2 version, or the following Beta versions that will appear before the release of 3.0 will come even closer.

Internet Explorer 7
IE7 is one of the most spread browsers nowadays, but it doesn’t show any signs of passing. In fact, it shows one of the worst results.

So, let’s see it again: Opera passed, Firefox will pass as of this summer, but Internet Explorer is nowhere near. This could spell trouble in the future, if IE’s competitors manage to render their engines. This would mean that IE will drastically lose users, thus increasing Firefox’s ascension.

Yes, Safari was, to my knowledge, the first to pass the test, before Opera 9 and Konqueror.
