Wikipedia - $1,000,000 in donations!
January 10th, 2007Wikipedia entered 2007 as one of the most visited 10 websites in the world. What could be more relevant as a proof of success? Since they’re trying to be a reliable source of information, they’re predicting they will need additional funds, funds they cannot raise without your help.
In the coming year, the Wikimedia Foundation anticipates dramatically increasing spending to keep up with server and traffic capacity demands, add new staff on the organizational level, improve the software and develop methods to better ensure high quality content, all while making progress toward their goal of giving free knowledge to everyone.

They have put together a fund raising. By donating, you will be making an investment in Wikipedia and all of their associated projects, helping to ensure those resources remain accessible and meaningful as their universe of users grows. At the time I’m writing this article, the total donations are only a step away from one million dollars.
After about two weeks ago there was a huge boost from $402,000 to $689,000 because of one contribution by an anonymous friend on 2006-12-27 at 22:17:00 for the amount of $286,800, Wikipedia is closer than ever from the huge figure. Congratulations.
If you are interested into following in close-up the full donations process, this is the official web page.

I Was the One who Donated that money.. Its such a great website.
I strongly doubt that. If you make this kind of affirmations, please provide valid proof.
On the other hand if he wanted to remain anonymous, I don’t see a single reason why he would admit it HERE.
Who’s to say it was a he?
I can’t understand why does wikipedia beg from people?
Instead of it, if they cooperate google adsense, they can at least gain 500 million dollars per year.
Katao, I think your missing the point somewhat. Wikipedia is a charitable organization. Like most (if not all) other charitable organizations, it is run from the donations of it’s patrons.
Yes, they could make a considerable amount more from incorporating Adsense into the site. They would make a phenomenal amount more by selling advertising space straight to vendors. How much would Nike pay for a banner on the sneakers page? Or Microsoft for a banner on the operating system page?
The point is that Wikipedia is not about making money, and it’s most definately not about advertising. It’s an encyclopedia, which is unique because the information it provides is controlled by you, me and anyone else that makes the effort. Being free from any commercial intrest’s will ensure that this is always the case.
