All the roads lead to Google
December 30th, 2006
Have you ever been in the hurry and misstyped a web address? What was the result? Another page, or no page at all. There are a lot of reasons for a misspelling. Some occur because you are in a hurry and your fingers are faster than your brain, or the other way around.
Omissions as in Googl or permutations of two characters as in Goolge are a typical result of such processes. Other possibilities are related to the exceptional spelling of Google. Google is based on the word Googol, a mathematical definition of a very big number - the figure 1 followed by 100 zeros. As it is such an uncommon word it’s normal to either misspeak or mishear or misinterpret it. There are local differences, in Germany the most common misspelling is Googel. Contrary to the English language, where Goggle is the dominant keyword, in German language we find a more balanced distribution of keywords.
Besides single keywords like Goggle or Gogle there is a noticeable amount of queries including combinations like www.google.com or just google.com, thus producing similar misspelled/typed combinations like www.goggle.com or gogle.com. Not all of this queries derive from direct searches via search engine forms, a significant part comes from browser and toolbar redirects in case of negative domain name resolving.
It seems Google thought about all these options and redirect every above mentioned request to their correct homepage.
