AMD quietly releases 5400+ and 5600+ processors
December 12th, 2006Even if AMD isn’t riding the pink cloud at the moment according to the market, they are still on schedule in releasing their last generation of CPUs. The new processors come under the mark of 5400+ and 5600+ and with a clock speed of 2.8GhZ.
The 5400+ comes with an amount of 512KB L2 cache per core, therefore a total of 1MB while the 5600+ comes with 1MB per core. That’s double, a total of 2MB per CPU. Like you got used to, a few words about the price. 5400+ will cost ~$485 and it’s successor $505. That’s a well chosen price noting the fact that AMD was lately going for the extremes. Its last release from the series, the 5200+ was rated at $403, and the AMD FX-62 to $713. Like I said, that’s a huge gap covered by the new launch.
There is no information regarding the manufacturing process, but it seems that for now the CPUs will be manufactured under 90nm process (with SOI enhancements obviously). A new series of the same CPUs will enter the market in the 1st quarter of 2007 being manufactured under the 65nm process. AMD also wants to speed up the introduction of its new high-end X2 CPUs lines, 5800+ and 6000+ CPU lines.
