Samsung presents fuel-powered cell phones

Fuelcell

Samsung’s intention of developing cell phones that are powered by fuel cells is not hot news anymore for most of us, but few people know so far that Samsung’s Institute of Technology developed a fuel cell that is able to fully charge a cell phone in just a few hours.

The cell weights only 180g, and it’s based on a combination of hydrogen, methanol and breathing air. The advanced piece of equipment can be used to recharge your phone in exactly two hours.

The above mentioned combination is able to generate a 2W power source, compatible with the phone. They say it was tested, and the cell successfully recharged the phone for 200 times in a row, without negative effects.

Rumor says that the cells will hit mass production soon. The price tag will be somewhere around a dollar ($1) for one rechargeable methanol cartridge. One of these will be useful for your phone for only two times ;)
On the other hand, the fuel cell charger is even more convenient because it allows the use of the device while charging.

Ups:
- 50% reduced charging time
- no need for a power resource
- no wires, no slots

Downs:
- not fully implemented so far
- why only two charges? :)

Overall, it seems like another useful gadget for the future. I’m sure that sometime soon, this will extend from the cell phones to every other electronic equipment that requires power (laptops, PDA’s, and so on).

I’m inviting you all to share opinions by posting a comment.

  1. netgem:

This fuel cell used only the methanol as fuel. The price of methanol cartridge is 1$, not the entire fuel cell.

You are correct, thanks for noticing. Article edited ;)

a little bit off topic did anyone see the 60 minutes interview last night about Bloom Box..?
