HD-DVD gets ahead of Blu-Ray
November 25th, 2006
Lately, the HD-DVD content started to spread, and it’s quite a popular option among users. While observing the market, I noticed that the “war” between the two formats is being disputed from the popularity point of view, and sales.
Both technologies use 405nm wavelength lasers rays, but Blu-Ray’s readable surface is 0.1mm distant from the outside surface of the disk, while HD’s stays deeper down at 0.6mm. It means that if scratched, HD is more resistant. Even if Blu-Rays can hold 27GB and the production costs are quite high, reported to that, HD can hold up to 30GB (15GB/layer)
As for the retail price, HD outstands Blu-Ray, with a $2 difference a piece. ($25 vs. $27).
Another important issue is the availability of products. They can be counted on fingers for both, but Blu-Ray has only 3 released products that cost two times more than HD’s 6 products on the market. See the difference?
This might not be important so far, there are slight differences. Supposing that your IT store has all of their products and you’re willing to pay the two extra dollars, you can find bulk storage disks for everyone and everywhere, and you have sworn to keep your disks in a protective case, what will make the difference? The price of the units , of course.
This is the biggest problem right now, that has convinced me to conclude that the HD-DVD drives outpace Blu-Ray drives. At least at this point. I have seen reasonable HD-DVD units that went up to ~$230. That might seem much, but the cheapest Blu-Ray drive gets all the way up to ~$800.
I rest my case and await your opinions.
