phpbb3

Open-sourced Bulletin Boards, beware! According to the Romanian phpBB community, phpBB.com has launched the Beta 3 version of the next generation phpBB board, 3.0 “Olympus”.

I am myself a phpBB-er as well since my personal forum is powered by phpBB, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd major release of this community.

phpBB 3.0 “Olympus” Beta 3 can be used only for testing purposes and it’s not recommended to be used in live forums; for those, it’s more suitable the stable version 2.0

Since Beta2, thanks to the phpbb.com community, ~300 bugs were reported and fixed starting August 12, 2006. Not only reports were submitted, but also opinions about the existing options and reports about the “weird software environment”. The visual confirmation images (“captchas”) were replaced and a full UTF-8 compatibility was implemented.

The latest Beta can be downloaded from phpBB’s Development page

Minimum requirements for phpBB3:

* A web server or a hosting account that runs any major operating system and PHP support
* A SQL database server out of the following:
o MySQL 3.23 or newer (MySQLi is also supported)
o PostgreSQL 7.3+
o SQLite 2.8.2+
o Firebird 2.0+
o MS SQL Server 2000 or newer
o Oracle
* PHP 4.3.3 or newer, with DB support
* The optional presence of the following PHP modules will grant access to advanced options, but they’re not reallynecessary:
o zlib Compression
o Remote FTP
o XML
o Imagemagick
o GD

For the newcomers in this field, here is the Quick Starting guide for phpBB 3.0 and this is their English Support Forum.

We are expecting your comments related to this article, and we’re looking forward to hear your opinions on phpBB 3.
