We’re part of a spamocracy

October 30th, 2006

No spam

Have you ever spammed something? Not a little bit? One of your websites, perhaps? Come on, you can admit it. Your secret’s safe with us. It might be safe with us, but it’s not safe with the guys from SecurityFocus. They’ve been monitoring the spam activity in the past few months, and they noticed that in the past 2 (TWO) months, the spam percentage via e-mail was increased by 450%. What does that mean? Well, it could mean that the number of botnets are increasing. It could mean that there are many infected users out there that are recursively infecting others, and it could mean that they’re heading in the wrong direction if things continue to evolve like this.

Simple Audio-Video e-mailing

October 30th, 2006

Gabmail

I was browsing the web from work today, and I have found a website that surprised me by its simplicity and feedback-requesting from the end-user. The website’s main purpose is to send audio-video files from one person to another, via the Internet cloud, without having to worry about file size restrictions, bandwidth or incompatibilities between the two hosts.

Y! Messenger gets mobile

October 29th, 2006

Yahoo
As you probably know, Yahoo! Messenger is one of the most used chat programs around, along with IRC programs and ICQ. I’m not going to start with clichés. like “Society nowadays is on the move”, because the issue at hand is pretty simple: you, the Yahoo! Messenger user, aren’t around a PC, and you want to talk to your friends. All you have available is your cell phone. What do you do?There are a lot of solutions for this problem. I’m only going to cover a few, that I personally have tried out. If you’re going to try them out, you’ll only need a cell phone with GPRS connection, and to have the GPRS option activated from your provider.

Linux beats Windows at a corporate level

October 29th, 2006

LinuxWindows

The number of corporations choosing Linux as their main servers’ operating system has increased in the past semester and reported to the same period last year. A year ago, the percentage was 65%, 6 months ago it was close to 67% and today it raised up to 73%. What does that mean? From my point of view, more and more corporate companies are choosing Linux instead of Windows based platforms as it was at the beginning of this decade.

The president of Evans Data, John Andrews said “We continue to see Linux making deeper inroads into the Enterprise space as it matures to handle more critical business workloads,”

Linux-based systems already had an advantage against Windows just because they’re based on GNU and they’re open source. If things continue to evolve like this, very few NT based servers will be out there by the end of this decade ;)

Firefox 2 vs. IE7

October 29th, 2006

FF beats IE

I have to say that Google and Firefox are my lovemarks (Lovemarks by Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi), both because they offer great quality in a simple manner and they do it for free. I will enjoy writing about them in the future as I did until now, as I am a really satisfied user.

The download stats are out for Firefox 2 and IE7. Internet Explorer 7 was downloaded by 3 million people in the first 4 days, as found on the IEblog. In a few weeks, IE7 will be distributed via Automatic Updates for Windows XP; rumours say that it will be available as a critical update.

But the stats are in favor of Firefox. The version 2.0 of the browser had over 2 million downloads in the first 24 hours (with a peak rate of more than 30 downloads per second), as found on the weblog of Mike Beltzner.

Firefox’s popularity grows day by day, as more people find it more stable and more reliable than the Microsoft product. If you haven’t tested it, download it and judge for yourself.

Intel Quad Core is almost here

October 29th, 2006

IQQL

Only two weeks left until the deadline Intel promised to respect regarding the launch of the Intel Quad-Core chip. The long expected hardware “brain” will be initially produced to work only with HP workstations and it will try to overwhelm its competitor, AMD in the monthly statistics.

This is a big NO for all of the top-level end-users that were planning to test the core processor. The computers will probably use Intel’s planned Xeon 5300 chip, and will be designed to run high-end applications like seismic analysis and visualization technologies from major companies.

One of the first users that will test the chip will be the Gates Planetarium from Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science. Related to this, a press conference called “The Quad Fest” will take place there in two weeks. Reporters are invited.

The Intel Quad Core chip is a revolutionary device that we’re expecting to be available and most of all accessible, very soon among the end-users. After all, the end users make the difference, the end users are the people that can form a general opinion about a certain product, and after all, our thoughts matter.

Edgy eft, not so edgy

October 28th, 2006

1.gif

After Ubuntu released Edgy the last week I watched the forums in order to catch the first impressions and I have to say, I’m not amazed.

Many users had big problems trying to install, it seems there are some problems with drivers for video cards and other devices. But overcoming problems were always part of the average Linux user’s life, the real problem is that all seem to agree that this new release isn’t that cutting edge as expected. There are some interesting updates like the replacement of the old init daemon with upstart, and new versions of KDE and GNOME. Speaking of which, there seem to be quite a few problems with updating software, it seems that some of the latest versions are considered to be obsolete and a older software is installed.

But the whole thing is not that dark. It seems that the driver support, though faulty is quite extensive and supports a wide array of devices such as wireless devices, scanners, printers, etc. Also there are some additions to the packet management system such as the new -autoremove argument that can be used with ‘apt-get’ in order to remove unnecessary packages left behind by removing something.

All in all Edgy seems to be promising but not quite the cutting age expected to be.
